Water, water .. NOT everywhere!

There was quite a turnout last night at our program about our shrinking aquifer and the future of our fresh water. USGS Hydrologist Fred Stumm, environmentalist Mark Haubner, and Southold Town Water Quality Advisory Committee member and hydrogeologist Caroline Yates explained the science and methodologies behind the project study that is under way, and a gave a sneak peak at their soon-to-be-published findings.

The region's water supply faces severe vulnerability to saltwater intrusion, high nitrogen levels due to fragile, shallow aquifers and especially summertime household irrigation habits. Stay tuned to the Cutchogue Civic for future programs that will address what conservation efforts town residents can do to mitigate our environmental issues.
